Daewoo E&C Exports Eco-friendly Technology to the European Market

Signs technology export agreement with Italy's Technofluids for bio-gas co-generation plant

Daewoo E&C exports its own DBS technology - becoming the first Korean company to export an environmentally-friendly technology

Secures bridgehead for entry to Europe's 50-trillion-won bio-energy plant market

□ Daewoo E&C becomes first Korean company to export an environmentally-friendly technology

On January 13, Daewoo E&C announced that it had signed a technology export agreement with Italy's Technofluids, an international company specializing in water and waste treatment, to establish a bio gas-fueled co-generation plant.

Through this technology export agreement, DBS (Daewoo Two Phase Anaerobic Bio-Gas System) technology, which was independently developed by Daewoo Institute of Construction Technology, an affiliate of Daewoo E&C, will be exported to the European market. Daewoo E&C will receive royalties from all revenues generated.

DBS is a power plant system that generates gas and electricity using livestock manure, food waste and sludge, a technological first in Korea. It enables highly-efficient, eco-friendly, and economically-efficient generation of gas and electricity. Based on these strengths, Daewoo E&C signed an investment contract on August 28, 2008, with South Jeolla Province, worth 100 billion won, to establish a bio gas-fueled co-generation plant using livestock manure.

□ Daewoo E&C secures a bridgehead for entry to Europe's 50-trillion-won bio-energy plant market

Based on this technology export agreement, Daewoo E&C expects to take more than a 10% of market share in Europe's 50-trillion-won bio-energy market, which is currently dominated by German companies.

Seung-Mo Hong, Senior Researcher at Daewoo Institute of Construction Technology stated, "By taking the opportunity presented by this export agreement of DBS, Daewoo E&C has opened up a window to export not only to Europe, but also to Southeast Asia and to China, the largest organic waste market in the world."

Italy's Technofluids, which concluded the technology export agreement with Daewoo E&C, is a company that specializes in water and waste treatment, new and renewable energy. Its annual revenue amounts to about 850 million dollars. The Company plans to apply the DBS technology to the 1-megawatt bio gas plant located in Bologna, Italy, and expand throughout Europe in the future.

Daewoo E&C stated that the royalty for its technology will be determined according to revenue generated, and that it may disclose the specifics of the deal once the scale of business expands in the future.

□ Daewoo E&C leads the development of new technologies in Korea through bold R&D investments

In 1983, Daewoo E&C became the first company in Korea to establish an Institute of Construction Technology. What is more, its research institute is the largest-scale in the construction field in Asia. Even in 1997, when Korea was struck by the Asian Financial Crisis, Daewoo E&C increased its investment in R&D, which is a testament to its commitment to technology development.

Thanks to these consistent efforts, Daewoo E&C has led Korean companies in the export of construction technologies. Some notable examples include the technology licensing agreement that Daewoo E&C signed in 1997 with Katherine Thompson Company of the United States for its DWS technology (Daewoo Multi-room Modular Construction System), as well as the export agreement with Lungmen nuclear power plant in Taiwan for its core construction technologies and joint participation in the development of research reactors for export.

DBS Technology

The Environment Research Team at Daewoo Institute of Construction Technology affiliated with Daewoo E&C developed the Daewoo Two Phase Anaerobic Bio-Gas System (DBS) through a decade-long period of research. DBS works through the following process: First, organic acid is produced by putting livestock manure, food waste, and sludge into an acid reactor that contains a microorganism capable of producing organic acids. Second, this organic acid is put into a methane reactor containing methanogens, to produce methane gas. Unlike conventional digesters, a high-purity methane gas is produced, and the emission of organic pollutants is dramatically decreased through the DBS process. High-purity methane gas is more environmentally-friendly and efficient compared to low-purity methane gas, which has low heating value. After purification, refining, and compression, high-purity methane gas can be used as LNG ("city gas") and vehicle fuel.
